Today I had the satisfaction of putting 24 miles on my newly restored 1972 Honda CB175. The odometer displayed 2074 miles for the past 30 years, so it was nice to see it advance to 2098. The twin cylinder engine sounds great, and the transmission shifts easily through all 5 gears. The clutch engages much smoother than I had expected. I have a few adjustments to make here and there, but it’s essentially finished. This motorcycle is a lot of fun to ride.

During the initial run, I got the bike up to 62 MPH, although the engine sounds like it’s running a bit rich. I had adjusted the carburetors to run richer earlier when diagnosing an issue that turned out to be something else, so I probably had it set correctly in the first place. I’ll fix that later today.

I really like this little bike’s styling, with the inline twin cylinder engine and the symmetrical exhaust pipe arrangement … like a down-sized version of the old British bikes from the ’50s and ’60s. The skinny tires are also a throwback to the old days. It’ll be fun watching that odometer finally get some miles on it.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. I’m spending Father’s Day sick, with a sore throat and lots of congestion. So, I’m not getting as much accomplished this weekend as I had planned. Still, I did manage to make a little progress on the Honda CB175 project bike.

The engine is back in the frame. That will make it a bit easier to do the rest of the engine work. The engine side covers have been repainted with an aluminum engine paint, with a high-temp clear coat to give a bit of shine. The side covers will be put back on after I swap out the fiber clutch plates and clean the oil screen next weekend.

The front forks have also been put back together with new seals and fork oil.

I still have quite a bit of work to do, but I’m off work during the first 2 weeks of July, so hopefully I’ll make significant progress during that time.

The motorcycle restoration project took a few steps forward today. I finally got some time to disassemble the front forks. I’ve ordered new seals and dust covers for the forks to ensure that they won’t leak fluid. I was quite pleased to find the fork shafts to be in excellent shape, with not a single sign of pitting or roughness. I’ll reassemble the forks when the new seals and fork oil arrive.

I also painted a few more black parts, such as the lower engine mounts and the fork “triple tree” bridges. Finally, I managed to take some good old fashioned Brillo pads to the spokes and to some tiny rust spots on the wheel rimes. They cleaned up pretty well.

When I get the forks back together and mounted on the frame, I’ll start the reassembly of the motorcycle. I have the first two weeks of July off work, so I’m expecting to make some progress with the assembly. The bike was manufactured in October 1971 … wouldn’t it be nice to have it running by this October, in time for its 40th birthday?
