From everything I’ve read, deer in Michigan eat many types of trees and shrubs, preferring cedar, white pine and maple. Spruce is considered a “starvation food” for deer, since they tend to eat spruce only as a last resort. Given our fairly mild Winter so far, I was surprised to see that my camera trap pictures caught several shots of deer nibbling on my spruce tree. There are white pine and cedar trees everywhere here, among the omnipresent sumac that deer are supposed to prefer. I suppose they’ll eat what they want.

put some bait out poor starving deer
Those deer were probably stopping by for the sunflower seeds and corn already. I don’t think they were starving, and there’s hardly any snow to cover the ground.
